A collection of olympic events, 100m and 400m dash, gun shooting twice, boxing with a pre-event of training and long jump. The light athletic events remind of the classic Summer Games, the boxing game might be an unfinished own boxing game. Very boring.

Review

This sports games has been released relatively late, when the area of home computers like the C64 was already dawning.

A maximum of 8 players may compete in seven disciplines

1. Shooting Range

There are three targets to shoot at different sizes and that move at different speeds from left to right. The player may chose freely which target to shoot at. The target farthest away will yield the most points. There are 8 shots to fire in 90 seconds.
Aiming is done by positioning a horizontal and vertical bar which are located at the left and the bottom of the screen. The intersection of those two bars is where you shoot at.
Although the controls are quiet simple hitting the centre of the target the furthest away really requires good timing and eye sight.

2. 100m Dash

Well, what to say ? A sports game classic. Just try to get out of the blocks really quick and shake the stick as fast as you can. On a side note, the computer pacer always starts like a lightning.

3. Long Jump

The second track and field event is long jump. This quiet tricky event has some good potential for long term fun.
First the player can adjust the starting position of the approach run. Then shaking the stick will give your player speed.
When the sand pitch comes into sight, the jump can be started by pushing the button. The longer the push the higher the angle. In order to get a good jump, the dot at the bottom of the screen which is constantly moving from left to right should be in the centre position. Once in the air curl the stick to gain more meters.
Although it is easy to do a plain jump, mastering this event is quiet tricky. Combining, angle, jump position and the moving dot to a perfect jump is difficult and requires a lot of practice.

4. 400m Dash
After the technically challenging long jump it is time to get ride of some excess energy. And you need plenty of that for the 400m dash which is basically the 100m dash only 4 times as long. On a side note this event contains a nice little detail which I found very neat that the split times are actually displayed on the score board at the side of the track.

5. Boxing Training Camp

Strictly speaking this is not a single discipline but rather the event where you shape your boxer for the upcoming boxing. This event contains 4 mini games which you have to complete.
In the first game you have to follow your sparing partner as quick and precise as possible to make your boxer as agile as possible.
In the second game you have to complete the sequence of moves displayed at the bottom as fast as possible. The strength of the different strokes will be the result of how good you are here.
The next task is to push the weight bar. Curl your joystick as fast as possible to gain the maximum strength for your boxer
Last but not least you have to hit the treadmill in order to gain some stamina. The job here is to keep running in the intervals and not to over pace.
Once you have finished the training camp your boxer is ready to hit the boxing ring.

6. Boxing

This event really looks like a variant of Barry McGuigan World Championship Boxing. Much of the basic boxing punches like uppercut, hook and jab are available. Your boxer will have different strengths depending on how you did in the training camp. The option 'turbo' can be activated once to give your boxer that extra speed and strength for a short time you might need to deliver that decisive punch.
Boxing and the associated training camp could well have made an own game and are really fun to play. Especially against another human competitor.

7. Gun shooting

Gun shooting has the basic setup as the shooting range. The difference being that you shoot at a single static target displayed on the left. The controls are hyper-sensitive so to simulate that the target is actually far away. And it is quiet tricky to deliver a precise shoot. Especially since you only have 30 seconds for 7 shots.

Conclusion

Overall I like this game a lot. The events themselves (apart from the running events) are fun to play and some even offer long term motivation. What this game lacks is the atmosphere and glory from games like Summer Games I + II. The main menu is really minimalistic and there is no fancy stuff like flags or national anthems.
So if you are in for a technically challenging game without all that Olympic blows and whistles: Try it.
